Efficiency matters

Efficiency (W/TH) decides who profits. S21 class ASICs push ~15-18 J/TH; older units use 25+ J/TH.

Difficulty auto-adjusts

Every 2 weeks the network rebalances so a block is found every ~10 minutes. More miners = harder = lower reward per TH/s.

Halving every 4 years

The reward halves each ~210,000 blocks. 2028 drops it to 1.5625 BTC. Only miners with the lowest costs survive the cycle.

Is Bitcoin mining still profitable?
Profitability depends on your electricity price, hardware efficiency, the BTC price and network difficulty. This calculator runs those numbers for you in real time. At average electricity prices, small miners are rarely profitable; miners with cheap electricity (under $0.05/kWh) can still profit.
What is the most important factor in mining profitability?
Electricity cost is the dominant factor, followed by hardware efficiency (watts per terahash) and network difficulty. A 20% electricity-cost change usually moves your profit more than a 20% price change.
What does "break-even" mean in mining?
Break-even is the number of days of net profit required to repay the hardware purchase. After that, all net profit is pure gain. Higher electricity and difficulty push break-even further out.
How much energy does one Bitcoin transaction use?
Network-wide, Bitcoin uses roughly 120–150 TWh per year. Per transaction it appears large, but miners secure the whole network regardless of transaction count. This calculator focuses on your own rig's consumption.
What is network difficulty?
Difficulty measures how hard it is to find a new block. It auto-adjusts every 2 weeks so blocks stay at ~10 minutes. As more miners join, difficulty rises and your share of rewards shrinks.
What happens at the 2028 halving?
The block reward drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC, cutting newly issued supply in half. Unless the BTC price doubles, miner revenue falls — switch the reward field here to 1.5625 to model it.
Do I need an ASIC to mine Bitcoin?
Yes. GPUs and CPUs are hopelessly unprofitable for SHA-256 Bitcoin. Application-specific hardware (Antminer, Whatsminer) is required, and it is loud, hot and power-hungry.
