Progressive, not flat

You only pay each bracket rate on the income within it. A $80k single filer is not taxed 22% on everything.

Deductions lower the base

The standard deduction and pre-tax 401k/HSA contributions reduce taxable income before brackets apply — worth thousands.

Effective rate tells the truth

Your effective rate (total tax ÷ gross) is what you really keep, and is much lower than your marginal bracket.

FAQ

Tax calculator FAQ

How is US federal income tax calculated?
Federal tax is progressive: each portion of income is taxed at its bracket rate (10% to 37%). Your taxable income is your gross income minus the standard deduction and pre-tax contributions.
What are the 2025 federal tax brackets?
For single filers: 10% up to $11,925, then 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Married filing jointly has roughly double the thresholds. This calculator applies them automatically.
What is the standard deduction for 2025?
$14,600 for single filers and $29,200 for married filing jointly. It reduces your taxable income before brackets are applied.
What is FICA tax?
The US payroll tax: 6.2% Social Security (up to the $168,600 wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, and an extra 0.9% Medicare on income over $200,000.
What is my effective tax rate?
Your total tax divided by your gross income. Unlike your marginal bracket, the effective rate reflects all brackets, the standard deduction and payroll taxes.
Is this calculator accurate for my situation?
It is a solid estimate for federal and FICA with the standard deduction. It does not cover all credits, itemized deductions or every state's rules — check with a professional for precision.
How much should I withhold?
Your W-4 withholding aims to match your actual tax. This calculator's take-home estimate helps you check if you are under or over withholding.
Do I pay tax on my whole salary?
No. You subtract the standard deduction and pre-tax contributions (401k, HSA) first, then apply brackets progressively. Not all income is taxed equally.
