Real driving time is often 10–30% longer than the free-flow estimate due to traffic and stops.

Distance ÷ speed = time

The core formula. 150 km at 60 km/h is 2.5 hours. Add breaks and a traffic buffer for real-world trips.

Modes differ a lot

Walking ~5 km/h, cycling 15–25, city driving 30–40, highway 100, rail 120, flight 850. Pick the right average.

Plan the arrival, not the drive

Work backwards from when you need to arrive and add buffer. Arriving 20 minutes early beats being 20 late.

FAQ

Travel time FAQ

How do I calculate travel time?
Divide the distance by the average speed. 300 km at 100 km/h takes 3 hours. This calculator also adds a departure time to show your arrival.
What is a good average driving speed?
For a highway trip, 90–110 km/h. City driving averages much lower — 30–40 km/h due to traffic and lights.
How fast does a person walk?
A comfortable walking pace is about 5 km/h (12 min/km). Fast walking is 6–7 km/h.
What is average cycling speed?
Leisure cycling is 15–18 km/h; commuting with e-bikes or road bikes can reach 20–30 km/h.
How do I calculate average speed?
Divide total distance by total time. If you drive 200 km in 2.5 hours, your average is 80 km/h.
Does traffic affect travel time?
Yes, a lot. City trips can take 1.5–2× longer than the free-flow estimate. Add a buffer for rush hour.
How do I add breaks to a road trip?
Plan one 15-minute break every 2 hours of driving. Add your break minutes to the driving time for a realistic total.
How is pace (min/km) calculated?
Divide 60 by the speed in km/h. At 5 km/h, pace is 60/5 = 12 minutes per kilometer.
